There’s a reading pattern I’ve watched play out so many times that I can spot it within about thirty seconds. It doesn’t matter what deck is being used or what spread. It doesn’t even matter how much the reader knows about their cards. You can identify it purely by the rhythm of how someone speaks.
It goes like this: Card one, explanation. Pause. Card two, explanation. Pause. Card three, explanation. Pause. A summary that restates what’s already been said. A hedge or two. The end.
The reader is technically doing tarot. Every card is addressed. Meanings are correct. And yet nothing has actually been read. The Seeker leaves with a list of card meanings loosely organised around their question — and the subtle, persistent feeling that something wasn’t quite said.
This is the flow problem. And in my observation, it’s the single biggest breakdown point between knowing tarot and being able to read it.
What Flow Actually Is
The word “flow” is used loosely in tarot, often to mean something vague like intuitive ease or being “in the zone.” That’s not what I mean here.
Flow, in the sense I’m using it, is structural. It’s the connective logic that moves a reading from card to card in a way that creates a coherent, directional narrative. Not just meaning for each position, but relationship between positions — causality, tension, movement, resolution.
A reading without flow is a list. A reading with flow is a sequence. And a sequence, unlike a list, has inherent meaning in its movement. Something begins. Something shifts. Something resolves, or doesn’t. The direction matters. The shape matters. The reader’s job is not just to interpret individual cards but to track and communicate that shape.
This is why I’ve spent thirty years as a journalist and forty-plus as a reader, and why I believe those two disciplines have informed each other more than people might expect. A journalist who delivers a list of facts has not yet written a story. A tarot reader who delivers a list of card meanings has not yet given a reading. In both cases, the raw material is there. The craft is in the construction.
Why It Breaks Down
Flow breaks down for several reasons, and they tend to cluster at predictable points in a reader’s development.
The knowledge anchor. When a reader’s primary relationship is with individual card meanings, the natural unit of attention is the card. You look at a card, you access its meaning, you communicate that meaning, you move to the next card. This is a card-by-card model of reading, and it produces card-by-card output. The reader isn’t moving between cards so much as visiting them in sequence.
The shift required is from card-centric attention to spread-centric attention. Before you speak a single word, what is the spread telling you as a system? What’s the overall energetic direction? Where is the weight sitting? Where is the tension? Where is the movement? Reading the spread as a whole before addressing any part of it is a discipline that dramatically changes the quality of what follows.
Position confusion. Flow also breaks down when readers haven’t fully internalised the sequential or logical relationship between positions in a spread. If you’re using a Celtic Cross and you can describe what each position represents but you don’t have a felt sense of how Position 3 relates to Position 10, the reading will have gaps where the logic should be. Each position is a node. Flow is what happens on the connections between nodes.
This is one of the reasons The Deck Compass methodology pays particular attention to spread architecture — not just what each position means in isolation, but the logic of their relationships to each other. A spread is a map, and maps have territories. You need to understand the territory before you can guide someone through it.
Confidence hesitation. This is the interpersonal version of the problem. Readers often stall at transition points between cards not because they don’t know what to say next, but because they’re uncertain whether what they’re about to say is “right.” So they qualify, they circle back, they hedge. And the reading loses its forward momentum.
This is where trust in methodology becomes practical rather than abstract. A reader with a reliable process framework can hold their confidence through uncertainty — not because they’re certain about every interpretation, but because they trust the structure they’re working within. They know where they are in the reading. They know the logic of the next move. That structural confidence enables interpretive confidence.
Reading as Sequence: The Three-Part Logic
In The Deck Compass framework, I work with what I call the three-part reading logic, which underlies most effective spread structures regardless of how many positions they contain.
Something begins. Every reading has an initiating energy — a starting condition, a question being asked by the situation itself, a seed from which the rest grows. Identifying this clearly, early, and naming it explicitly in the reading anchors everything that follows.
Something shifts. This is the movement, the change, the dynamic tension in the middle of the spread. It might be an obstacle, an opportunity, an internal shift required, an external force in motion. Whatever form it takes, there is movement happening — and the reader’s job is to trace that movement rather than merely note each waypoint along it.
Something resolves. Not necessarily into resolution in the conventional sense — tarot doesn’t always end with neat answers. But the energy moves somewhere. A direction becomes clearer, or less clear. A threshold is named. A possibility opens or closes. Something in the spread is doing the work of pointing forward, even when forward is uncertain.
When readers internalise this logic, flow often unlocks almost immediately. Because instead of looking at Card 5 and thinking “what does this card mean?” they’re thinking “what is the shape of this shift?” The question changes the kind of answer they reach for.
The Connective Language of Readings
There is also a purely linguistic dimension to this that doesn’t get enough attention.
The words a reader uses between cards carry enormous weight. “And” creates accumulation. “But” creates tension. “Because” creates causality. “Which means” creates consequence. “And yet” creates contradiction. These are not cosmetic choices — they are the architecture of how a reading is heard and felt by the person receiving it.
Readers who default to “and” throughout a reading produce the list effect even when their content is strong. Readers who vary their connective language — who track the relationship between what one card is saying and what the next is saying, and choose the word that names that relationship accurately — produce readings that move.
This is a learnable skill. I work with it explicitly in The Deck Compass because it sits at the intersection of reading craft and communication craft, and it’s one of the fastest intervention points for improving the quality of a live reading.
Let me show you what this looks like in practice.
The List Effect vs. Flow: A Direct Comparison
Here’s a three-card spread — Past, Present, Future — for a Seeker asking: “What do I need to know about my current career situation?”
The cards:
- Past: Eight of Pentacles
- Present: Five of Cups
- Future: The Star
Version 1: The List Effect (using only “and”)
“You’ve got the Eight of Pentacles in the past, and that shows hard work, and dedication, and building your skills, and putting in effort over time, and focusing on learning, and showing up consistently.
In the present you have the Five of Cups, and that’s disappointment, and regret, and feeling like something hasn’t worked out, and focusing on loss, and emotional frustration, and possibly not seeing what is still available.
And then in the future you have The Star, and that’s hope, and healing, and renewal, and optimism, and a sense of guidance, and things improving, and feeling more aligned, and trusting again.”
That’s technically accurate. Every meaning is correct. And it’s completely inert. The Seeker gets three separate observations with no connection between them. No causality. No shape. No movement.
Version 2: Flow (using connective language that tracks relationship)
“What I’m seeing straight away is a clear emotional arc sitting on top of a very solid work ethic.
You’ve come out of the Eight of Pentacles — so this isn’t someone who hasn’t applied themselves. You’ve invested time, energy, and focus into your craft. There’s skill here. There’s discipline. You’ve done what you were supposed to do to build something stable.
But that leads us directly into your present — the Five of Cups — and this is where the tension sits.
Because despite that effort, something hasn’t landed the way you expected. There’s a sense of ‘I did the work… so why doesn’t this feel right?’ or ‘Why hasn’t this turned into what I thought it would?’
And the important thing here is: the Five of Cups doesn’t erase the Eight. It reframes it.
You’re not starting from failure — you’re reacting to a perceived loss or misalignment. The focus has narrowed onto what hasn’t worked, and in doing that, it’s temporarily obscuring what has been built.
Now, where this becomes very interesting is the movement into The Star.
Because The Star doesn’t come in to fix the situation externally — it comes in to reorient you internally.
This is a shift from effort → disappointment → meaning.
The Star is asking you to lift your eyes from what didn’t work and reconnect to a longer arc — something more aligned, more authentic, and actually more you than what you were previously building.
So in practical terms for your career:
This isn’t saying ‘work harder’ — you’ve already done that.
It’s saying: What you built was real, but it may not be the right container for where you’re going next.
And the opportunity here isn’t to abandon everything — it’s to redeploy what you’ve already mastered into something that feels more aligned and more hopeful.
The Star suggests that clarity returns when you stop measuring this moment as a failure and start seeing it as a recalibration.
So the trajectory is: You built something with real skill → you’re currently grieving or questioning its outcome → and you’re moving toward a phase where you realign with purpose, direction, and a sense of quiet confidence again.
This is less about collapse… and much more about course correction.”
What Changed Between Version 1 and Version 2
The second version doesn’t contain more information. It contains more relationship.
Notice the connective words:
- “But that leads us directly into…” — signals causality
- “Because despite that effort…” — names the tension
- “The Five of Cups doesn’t erase the Eight. It reframes it.” — relationship between cards
- “Because The Star doesn’t come in to fix… it comes in to reorient” — clarifies the nature of movement
- “This is a shift from… to… to…” — tracks the arc
The first version visits each card. The second version moves through them. And that movement creates meaning that no individual card could generate on its own.
This is what flow does. It transforms observation into insight. It gives the Seeker something they can work with — not just information, but direction.
A Note on Silence
One more element of flow that is consistently undervalued: silence.
The card-by-card reading pattern I described at the start of this piece isn’t just about the words. It’s about the pauses too — they’re gaps rather than moments of presence. There is a different kind of silence available to a reader who is in relationship with the spread as a whole: a held pause, where the reader is genuinely tracking something, following a thread, moving toward a clarity. This kind of silence does not interrupt flow. It deepens it.
The Seeker can feel the difference. When a reader pauses because they’re lost or uncertain, the pause generates anxiety. When a reader pauses because they’re seeing — following the logic inward before naming it — the pause generates trust. Learning to distinguish between these in your own reading practice is worth significant attention.
The pause that deepens flow is the pause where you’re reading the relationship between cards, not retrieving the meaning of the next one. You’re asking: how does this connect? What’s the shape of this movement? Where is this taking us?
That kind of pause doesn’t break momentum. It creates it.
The Practice: Building Flow Deliberately
This is a skill you can train outside of live readings, and I recommend it.
Pull a three-card spread for yourself. Any question. Before you interpret a single card, read the spread as a whole:
- What’s the overall energy?
- Where’s the weight sitting?
- What suits are present? What elements?
- Is there tension between cards or harmony?
- What’s the direction of movement across the three positions?
Write down your observations about the spread as a system before you address individual cards.
Then, when you move into interpretation, practice your connective language deliberately. Don’t use “and” more than once. Force yourself to choose:
- But
- Because
- Which means
- And yet
- So
- This is why
Each of these words creates a different kind of relationship. Practice naming the relationship accurately, not just listing the content.
Do this daily for two weeks and your live readings will change. Not because you know more — because you’re constructing differently.
What Comes Next
In the fourth and final article in this series, I turn to timing — one of the most persistent and problematic elements in tarot practice. The shift happening among advanced readers around prediction and timing is, I think, one of the most meaningful recalibrations of the whole craft. Not abandoning timing, but rethinking what we’re actually measuring when we read it.
Flow gives a reading its shape. Timing gives it its practical grounding. And both require the same fundamental shift: from performing knowledge to tracking what’s actually present.
